Packing Tips for the Big Move!

Moving into a new home can be a stressful process. After all, you are picking up your whole life and, in a way, starting over in a new place. It can be easy to worry that you're going to forget something, that items will get lost in the process, or that packing won't go well and your belongings will be impossible to find later. Your Favorite Real Estate Team is here for you to help with tips and tricks on how to pack like a pro for a smooth move into your new house at the Lake of the Ozarks. Read on to learn more!

Make a Checklist

If you try to dive into the packing process without a plan or checklist, then it could quickly become overwhelming and things could be forgotten. For instance, you may be so used to the shower curtains being a permanent fixture in the bathroom that you forget to pack them!

Make a detailed list room-by-room of everything that needs to be packed. It can be helpful to plan ahead for fragile or heavy items to get a special place in the moving truck. This can prevent a top-heavy stack of boxes or the breakage of your valuable possessions.

Declutter

Take the move as the perfect opportunity to get rid of anything that you no longer use. The more you are able to get rid of, the less you will have to pack and transport to the new house. There are several different decluttering methods you can use to make quick work of the stuff that is just taking up room in the house. Do some research on decluttering and organization, pick the method that makes the most sense to you, then take it on!

Pack an Essentials Box

There are a few items that you will need access to right away when you move into your new home. If these items are packed away at the bottom of a box, it could be very difficult if not impossible to find. Grab a sturdy box - or better yet, a clear tote - and pack the things you know you will want access to during the moving process.

Check out this list for inspiration:
  • Masking tape and a sharpie to help label boxes
  • Scissors or an Exacto knife for unpacking
  • Toilet paper and paper towels
  • Dishes to get through the first week (Plastic or paper are okay! No need to be fancy.)
  • Snacks and a few non-perishable meals for the first nights (think pasta and a jar of spaghetti sauce)
  • Curtains - Feel comfortable the first night without neighbors being able to see in the windows
  • Towels and a shower curtain
  • Medications
  • Toiletries
  • Anything else you will need quick access to in the first week at your new house

Goldilocks Packing

It's important to pack your boxes JUST right... not too full or too empty. If the boxes are too full, items could fall out and get lost and the boxes will be difficult to stack on top of one another in the moving truck. If they are too empty, then your items could be bumped around inside causing damage. Plan your packing so that each box is full just to the top and the flaps can still close securely.

Get Creative

Some people buy bubble wrap and expensive packing material when they move. While there is no problem with doing this if it's in your moving budget, there are several more affordable and convenient ways to pack our items. If you have enough advanced notice, start saving back newspapers to wrap your fragile items and prevent breakage. A great "life hack" for packing is to use your t-shirts, sweatshirts, sweatpants, and other casualwear to wrap your items. Doing it this way serves a dual purpose. You are packing your fragile items carefully and packing your dresser drawers at the same time!
