Top Dock Safety Tips for Waterfront Properties at the Lake

Buying a waterfront home on the Lake of the Ozarks is an exciting time. That lakefront home you've been dreaming of is finally yours! Along with living on the water comes a few extra dangers and our real estate team at the Lake of the Ozarks is here to point out some safety precautions you should take if you're buying a waterfront home at the Lake of the Ozarks!

Have your Dock Inspected

A dock should be inspected annually to ensure it is a safe place for you and your guests. Any suggestions from the inspection should be taken seriously and corrected right away. A structural issue with your dock could lead to a more expensive repair down the road or even injure someone near your dock. Take these kinds of repairs seriously!

Be Aware of Electric Shock

Your inspection should include an electrical inspection, but if it doesn't, contact a local electrician to clear your dock before anyone swims near it. An electric line that isn't properly grounded can send electric shock waves into the water surrounding your dock. Make sure all swimmers are aware that you should swim away from the dock if they feel a shock in the water. Touching the metal ladder if there's electricity flowing near it could cause serious injury, or worse.

Ensure Life Jackets or Water Floats are Available

Hanging out by the dock is one of the biggest perks of living on the water! When anyone is swimming, ensure they have a floatation device near. Even the most strong swimmers can get tired quickly and it's best to have a water float they can grab ahold of if needed.

Teach your Family to Respect the Water

It's best to ensure anyone that will be near your dock have a healthy respect for the water. Cover the potential dangers that lurk on and near your dock. Once you've talked about the potential dangers, talk about ways to avoid these dangerous situations. Dock safety is a very serious topic and something you and your crew should no take lightly.

Have an Adult Present when Kids are on Dock

A responsible adult should be around when kids are swimming. Sometimes kids don't think their actions through and can get themselves in a dangerous situation. An adult nearby can help kids who are playing on the dock or in the water avoid this kind of situation and be readily available to jump in and help if danger strikes.

Now that you have some of these safety tips top of mind, you're better prepared to be a responsible homeowner at the Lake of the Ozarks. You're likely going to host some gatherings to show off your new space and that's fantastic! These tips will help you be more aware of your family and your friends, while around your new waterfront home and dock. Now get out there & enjoy it!
