No matter where you are, there a few great tips to help you prepare the house for a comfortable, safe fall season. Keep reading to learn more!

Check Your HVAC

HVAC is an important element in keeping your house comfortable year round. In the winter, it becomes a necessity to keep you and your family safe and healthy during freezing temperatures. To make sure your heating system is working properly, it's a good idea to schedule a maintenance check with a professional company in your area. It's also important to keep your filters clean by regularly changing them according to the instructions (usually every month for 1-inch filters).

Get a Smart Thermostat

Smart and programmable thermostats can help you save energy in any season. These systems can memorize your patterns so that the house is set at an optimal temperature throughout the day (i.e. warmer when you're home and cooler when you're out of the house and the temperature isn't as important).

Check for Leaks

Your home may be fairly new and have solid construction, but it is still important to check for leaks that may have appeared around windows and doors due to settling or other situations. These leaks can make your home struggle to keep up with the proper temperature and can even let pests like bugs and rodents into the house. Gross!

Make a Safety Plan

Fires can be common in the fall as people enjoy bonfires outside, or turn their heat on for the first time with potential blockages. It's important to have a fire safety plan and to review it regularly with the family. If bedrooms are located on upper levels of the house, it's a good idea to have a roll-away escape ladder so occupants can safely evacuate the house in case of a fire. Be sure to change the batteries in your smoke detector as necessary and have fire extinguishers available in key areas of the home (think, kitchen).

Maintain the Yard

it's easy to let landscaping concerns fall by the wayside in fall because of the cooler temperatures. Everything is going dormant anyway, right? That is actually not true! Grass doesn't go dormant until the first frost of the year. So, keep taking care of the yard for as long as you can by regularly mowing, keeping an eye on the hydration levels, and raking any fallen leaves that could cause issues for the grass.

Inspect the Roof

Roof inspections are important to schedule on a regular basis to ensure there isn't any damage starting to form. If there is a crack in the roof or damage to your shingles, then it will only be a matter of time before the whole roof suffers and could cause expensive repairs. Contact a local roofing company to come out and do a professional inspection of the roof to make sure everything is good to go before the whole thing is covered in snow and harder to see.
