10 Tips for making your move to the Lake of the Ozarks more seamless – Part 1

So you are buying a home at the Lake of the Ozarks … and we are so excited for you!  The Lake of the Ozarks is a wonderful place to live, and now the only thing between you and the lake life is … the move.  We are here to help with some tips to make that process more seamless and less frustrating.  Here are some things to consider when getting started.

1)Plan ahead.

You will want to start a notebook to keep track of everything.  There will be several people or companies you will need to contact and let them know you are moving.  You will want to arrange ahead of time to have utilities such as electric, gas, internet, cable, trash services, etc. shut off in your old home and turned on in your new home. You will also need to update your new address with your bank, insurance agent, doctor, and any company that sends you bills, as well as your online shopping accounts and subscription.  If you have a gym membership you will want to stop or transfer that to your new location. You will also need to be prepared to register to vote, register your vehicle, and choose a new pharmacy so your prescriptions are not delayed.  It is much easier to take care of these things ahead of time, and not leave anything out, when you plan ahead and keep track.

2) Set aside your essentials, valuables and sentimental items to pack last.

It is a good idea to put aside a week’s worth of clothes for every family member (including PJs), as well as toiletries and meds.  You will be very glad if you put all of your important paperwork together as well – bills, moving contracts, IDs, etc. and you always want to be sure of where your valuables and sentimental items are so they are not lost or misplaced. Of course you will want to be able to find your phones and chargers, and toys for kids and pets.  Don’t forget a tool kit, basic dishes and cutlery, and bedding/linens.  These are all things you will want to be able to put your hands on immediately without digging in a moving truck.

3) Pack up one room at a time.

Use labels that clearly show what is in the box and which room it goes in, and be specific.  When you get to your new location, designate a spot in each room to place boxes so you are leaving space and pathways for moving and sorting and unpacking.

4) Have a cleaning kit.

It is easy to forget, but may be one of the first things you will want when you get to your new home (unless you hire a professional cleaning company before you arrive).  Paper towels, cleaning rags, dish soap, gloves, trash bags, a box cutter, light bulbs, flashlights, a broom and dustpan, a shower curtain, batteries, will all come in handy … and toilet paper, don’t forget the toilet paper!

5) Unpack strategically.

The first thing to set up in your new home is the bedroom.  Moving is exhausting and by the time you know you are tired, you will not want to have to do a scavenger hunt for your bedding.  Set up your bed first, then the bathroom, then kitchen basics.  Everything else you can do in due time, but you know you will need those three rooms to have the essentials needed to function the first day in your new home at the Lake of the Ozarks.

Planning ahead and staying organized can help prevent so many headaches along the way.  Packing your essentials and valuables last and keeping them separate will assure that you can put your hands on them at any moment.  Packing up one room at a time and using clear labels will make unpacking much more orderly.  Remembering tools and cleaning supplies will also make a big difference.  Last but not least, setting up for basic functioning in your bedroom, bathroom, and kitchen first will make your first day in your new home so much easier.

Finally, don’t forget all the reasons you are choosing to live at the Lake of the Ozarks.  When things get frustrating or overwhelming during your move, remind yourself of why you are doing it and how many memories you will make here.  That will help you get through the move with a positive mindset, and look forward to your new life.  Your Favorite Real Estate Team welcomes you to the Lake and wish you all the best in your new ventures!  Congratulations on finding your Happy Place!
