3 Simple Ways to Make Your Move Less Stressful

Right now, people are moving to the Lake of the Ozarks faster than ever and Your Favorite Real Estate Team has helped a lot of buyers find their forever lake home this year!  If you are preparing to make your move to the lake, we know it is an exciting time and you just want to get settled in and start living the lake life you have dreamed of for so long.  So, we wanted to share some tips with you to help make your move easier and less stressful.  Read on to learn more!

1) Reduce and Recycle

The less stuff you have to move the better.  We all accumulate things that we think we need but end up not using.  If you can’t remember the last time you used an item, consider donating it to someone else who may actually have use for it.  There are numerous non-profits at the Lake of the Ozarks who do great work and would appreciate donations of useful items in good condition.  You can feel great about paring down and reduce your workload at the same time.

2) Plan and Organize

Without a checklist or plan, things can get pretty disorganized in the hustle and bustle of a move.  One easy way to keep things in order is to go room by room.  Before you even start packing, make a checklist of what needs to be done or packed in each room and be mindful of heavy or fragile items that will need to be packed more carefully or in a certain order.  Heavy items should be at the bottom of a stack of boxes, fragile items at the top or by themselves. Don’t forget items that seem like part of the house such as shower curtains and shades. Also, do your best to label each box well. If there are a lot of miscellaneous items you can even tape a Ziploc bag to the box and write the items in the box on a piece of paper, fold it with the writing out and place it in the bag.  You will be glad for the details when you don’t have to open and look through boxes to know what is in them.

3) Set Aside Essentials

There will be some things you will want to keep separate and have available without unpacking.  Paper towels, toilet paper/hygiene items/medications, cleaning supplies, towels, dishes (disposable is great), scissor, tape, pens and Sharpies … these are all things you will be needing right away.  So, there is no reason to pack them deep in the moving truck.  Think about anything you will need in the first week at your new home.  PJs and a few outfits are also good to have handy, and even though you may not need them in your first week, consider keeping your important documents & valuables in your essentials box too (or separate from the rest of the stuff you are moving).  You don’t want to worry or wonder where your important items are in the middle of a move, so keep them separate and accessible for ease and peace of mind.
