As we approach the fall season, we thought we would share
some helpful information with homeowners to help make the fall and winter as
comfortable and stress free as possible with some tips for fall maintenance for
your home. If you would like to know
what you can do to prepare your house for fall, keep reading today’s blog.
Check HVAC
This is the time of year when we transition from using our
air conditioner to our furnace, and sometimes we may use both in the same
day! Before you put your furnace to the
test in the dead of winter, it is a good idea to check it in the fall to make
sure it is in good functioning condition.
Finding any aged or failing parts and replacing them preventatively can
be key to making sure you stay warm and comfortable all winter long. It is also
good to plan ahead if repairs will be needed as some parts may be on backorder
and take longer than expected to get in.
Check Roof
Winter weather can be a true test for your roof and just
like your HVAC system, it is recommended that you have your roof inspected
twice each year. If you have leaks or
water dams they can become much more damaging when temperatures freeze. A reputable roofing company is able to find
these problems in a standard inspection and offer solutions to prevent worse
problems in the winter.
Smart Thermostat
A smart thermostat can be an energy saver year round, and
during the winter months, that can really help your pocketbook. A smart
thermostat can recognize your heating and cooling patterns and adjust the
thermostat for the best efficiency. In
cooler months, it will lower the thermostat when you are at work or not at
home, and return to your preferred temperature before you come home. You can even make adjustments manually with
your smart phone from any location (which is a great asset for a second home
owner).
Check for Leaks
Anything you can do to make your home more energy efficient
will benefit your comfort level and your budget. Checking for air leaks and sealing or weather
stripping them keeps you from heating the great outdoors and wasting
energy. If you notice visible cracks or
feel air movement chances are, there is a leak and fixing may make a noticeable
difference.
Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Alarms
Accidental fires are more likely to happen in the winter
than any other time of year, and a properly working smoke alarm can give you
the time you need to stop a fire quickly or get to safety. Making sure you have a functioning smoke
alarm with fresh batteries is an easy and inexpensive way to safeguard your
home and your loved ones. As you use
your furnace more, having a carbon monoxide alarm becomes just as
important. It may be the only way you
would know if you had a carbon monoxide leak.
We hope you find these ideas helpful as we move into fall.
