Home Maintenance Tips for the Fall Season – part 2
If you read last week's blog, you know how much we love the fall at the Lake of the Ozarks. This has been an exciting year for Your Favorite Real Estate Team as we have helped countless people buy a home at the Lake of the Ozarks and start enjoying the lake lifestyle. As the seasons change, we wanted to help with some simple tips for home maintenance this fall. If you enjoyed part one of this blog, keep reading for more helpful hints.
Yard Maintenance
It is not just for the curb appeal, maintaining your yard can
yield several other benefits as well. Raking
the leaves and cleaning up debris like twigs, nuts, and broken branches will
help keep your lawn, trees, and shrubs healthier. When these materials pile up they can trap in
moisture and block out sunlight, potentially leading to mold growth, pests, and
other issues. When leaves and branches
dry up, they can also create a fire hazard. So, for safety, the health of your turf and plants, and for a nice-looking lawn, yard maintenance in the fall is a good thing
to do.
Fire Safety Plan
More house fires happen in the winter months than at any other
time of the year. Now is the time to
start thinking about the safest way to get out of your house if a fire were to
start. Planning ahead of time and practicing what to do can prepare you and
your family to act quickly and not panic.
Detach Water Hoses and Check Plumbing
We don’t have freezing temperatures yet, but before there is
any risk of that, it is a good idea to detach your water hose at the
spigot. If you forget, the hose bib can
freeze in the winter and break, causing a water leak inside your house or crawl
space. Unfortunately, that may occur in
a place you won’t notice until significant damage has been done (especially if you
do not live there full time). As part of your fall maintenance check, we
recommend taking care of this detail now, as well as inspecting all of your plumbing
for leaks.
Put Away Summer Toys and Yard Tools/Equipment
Fall cleaning and organizing set you up for a great winter season. It feels great to put away the summer toys and tools and switch them out for fall and winter gear and equipment. It is also good for your lawnmower and summer stuff to be properly stored and protected until they are needed again next year.
Inspect Trees
This too is not just about aesthetics, but also about your safety and the health of your trees. Consider the potential of storms with high winds, or winter snow and ice as you look at your trees and think about what to trim. If anything is at risk for falling on or near your home during a weather event, it is best to remove it preventatively. Also, trim whatever looks unhealthy, dead, or broken to give your trees and shrubs the best chance to grow and thrive.
Getting the house ready for fall and winter isn’t hard, it
is just easy to overlook. Especially
when there is so much to do and see at the Lake of the Ozarks this time of year. So, we just wanted to share a helpful list to
make it easier for you to be prepared and keep you and your home safe for the
season to come. As real estate agents at the Lake of the Ozarks who truly care, the last thing we want you to
experience is an avoidable disaster like a water line leak or a tree falling on
your house. If you are reading this blog
