Choosing the Right House to Make Home at Lake of the Ozarks

If you are thinking about buying a home in Lake of the Ozarks, we can sure understand why! We helped so many families make the move to Lake of the Ozarks last year, and we know how much they are going to enjoy life at the lake. What kind of lake home is best for you depends on several different factors. Will your lake home be a second home for you? Do you plan on using it as a vacation rental to help pay for itself? Will it be your full-time home? All of these things will make a difference. So, today’s blog is about how to choose the right home for you at Lake of the Ozarks. If you can use a few pointers to make the process better for you, just keep reading this blog!

Family

Obviously, the size of your family will determine how big the home needs to be. You also want to think about how often you have guests, or host friends and family. If you have several drivers in the family that can affect the size of the garage or driveway you need. If you have family that likes to spend a lot of time outdoors, or likes to cook, etc., those are factors you want to take into consideration when looking for a home at Lake of the Ozarks.

Purpose

The purpose for which you will be using the house will also determine your needs. If it will simply be a second home to spend time at the lake in, your criteria may be easier to meet. After all, you’re just trying to be comfortable for a few weeks out of the year. But what if you want to find a way to make your second home pay for itself? If you are planning on using it as a vacation rental, then you need to think about the needs of your guests, and what will make your home more attractive and inviting to a larger array of visitors. That means you may be looking for more bathrooms, more bedrooms, a bigger deck, or a private dock. That may be more than what you were looking for but could balance out with the income you’re able to earn from it. On the other hand, if you’re going to be living in the home full-time, having storage, a garage, and a screened-in porch may be more useful.

Location

Location can be more important at Lake of the Ozarks than in other cities or towns because the lake determines your travel route. There are places that are only a mile or two apart but it takes 30 minutes to drive from one to the other because you have to drive around the lake. So if you are going to live here full-time, you want to think about where you work and where you shop. If you work on one side of the toll bridge and live on the other, those toll fees can really add up. If it’s a second home or vacation home, it might not matter as much. However, if you’re planning on renting out to vacationers who want to spend most of their time on the east side of the lake, it could be limiting to buy your home on the west side. If you plan on having a property management company help you with your vacation rental, they can advise you on what locations are more easily rentable.

Lifestyle

What are some of the biggest reasons you wanted to live at the lake? Do you like fishing? Are you more into wakeboarding, or taking the grandkids tubing? Or are you really more about cruising and speed boating down the lake? What you like doing at the lake will determine which part of the lake you’ll enjoy the most. Are you interested in being in the middle of the action where all the entertainment is? Or would you like some more privacy and calmer waters where it’s safer for swimming and paddling?
