The purpose for which you will be using the house will also determine your needs. If it will simply be a second home to spend time at the lake in, your criteria may be easier to meet. After all, you’re just trying to be comfortable for a few weeks out of the year. But what if you want to find a way to make your second home pay for itself? If you are planning on using it as a vacation rental, then you need to think about the needs of your guests, and what will make your home more attractive and inviting to a larger array of visitors. There are places that are only a mile or two apart but it takes 30 minutes to drive from one to the other because you have to drive around the lake. So if you are going to live here full-time, you want to think about where you work and where you shop. If you work on one side of the toll bridge and live on the other, those toll fees can really add up. If it’s a second home or vacation home, it might not matter as much. However, if you’re planning on renting out to vacationers who want to spend most of their time on the east side of the lake, it could be limiting to buy your home on the west side.
